SHORT SYNOPSIS

50 % of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will increase to 80%. Life in a mega city is both enchanting and problematic. Today we face peak oil, climate change, loneliness and severe health issues due to our way of life. But why? The Danish architect and professor Jan Gehl has studied human behavior in cities through 40 years. He has documented how modern cities repel human interaction, and argues that we can build cities in a way, which takes human needs for inclusion and intimacy into account.

After the film, there will be a discussion with the audience and three panelists who will react to the film and relate it back to their experiences and their work here in St. Louis.

Our panelists are:

Paul Sorenson is the Manager of Community Building at Grace Hill, currently working in the College Hill neighborhood in north St. Louis City to improve educational advancement, economic development, public health and associated outcomes.  He is also a founder of GoodMap, an online tool that helps nonprofits and their stakeholders find, organize and share information about community resources.

Abby Stylianou is a researcher in the Media & Machines Lab, which is part of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at Washington University.  She helps manage the Archive of Many Outdoor Scenes (AMOS), a massive archive of outdoor webcams, currently recording over 20,000 publicly available webcams every 20 minutes. Her work focuses on how to use AMOS to observe and measure how people interact with their environment and how they react to change within it.

Frank Hu is a landscape architect, graduate of the Harvard University School of Design, and site designer at Forum Studio.  He also brings a perspective on international design to the panel, having worked for a summer in Shanghai and studied in Guangzhou.
